Command Sgt. Maj. Micheal D. Sutterfield joined the U.S. Army on May 12, 1992 as a private (E-2) air traffic control specialist from Jacksonville, AR. He attended Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson, SC and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Rucker, AL.

Command Sgt. Maj. Sutterfield has held numerous operational and leadership positions within aviation units from Air Traffic Control Facility Chief, Platoon Sergeant, Division Airspace Command and Control NCOIC, Combined/Joint Task Force J3 Air NCOIC, Battalion S3 NCOIC, First Sergeant, Brigade Operations Sergeant Major, and Battalion Command Sergeant Major.

His previous command sergeant major positions include the 1st Battalion, 223rd Aviation Regiment, Fort Rucker, AL, the 1st Battalion, 228th Aviation Regiment, Soto Cano Airbase, Honduras, the 12th Aviation Battalion, Fort Belvoir, VA, and the brigade command sergeant major for the 1st Aviation Brigade, Fort Rucker, AL.

Most recently he served as the G3 sergeant major for the 21st Theater Sustainment Command.

He is an inducted member of the Sergeant Audie Murphy Association. Command Sgt. Maj. Sutterfield is a recipient of the Army Aviation Association of America's Order of Saint Michael, Bronze Award. He was also selected as the Army Aviation Association of America’s Air Traffic Manager of the Year for 2005.

Command Sgt. Maj. Sutterfield is a graduate of Sergeants Major Course Class 60, where he was the recipient of the GEN Haines Research Award. His other military education includes: All levels of NCOES including Battle Staff NCO Course and First Sergeants Course, Joint Airspace Command and Control Course, Instructor Training Course, Small Group Instructor Training Course, Army Combatives Level I, SERE-C (High Risk, Full Spectrum), Senior Enlisted Joint Professional Military Education, Army Force Management Course (How the Army Runs), TRADOC Pre-Command Course (Brigade), and Command Sergeant Major Development Program for Battalion and Brigade.

Command Sgt. Maj. Sutterfield is a recipient of an Associates Degree in Social Science from Troy University in Sociology, Bachelors Degree in Multi-Disciplinary Studies from the University of Texas, El Paso, and a Masters of Science in Administration - Leadership from Central Michigan University.
