Col. Lance Varney assumed command of U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria, Germany, on July 5, 2016. Previously he was a student of the U.S. Army War College.

After serving three years as an enlisted member of the U.S. Army Reserves, Col. Varney received his commission as a U.S. Army Infantry Officer from the Reserve Officers Training Corps at Arkansas State University in 1993. He is a graduate of the Infantry Officer Basic Course, the Armor Advanced Course, Airborne School, Air Assault School, and the US Army Command and General Staff College.

Col. Varney’s most recent operational assignment was with the NATO Rapid Reaction Corps located in Lille, France, where he served as the Training Officer and Joint Task Force Exercise Coordinator. Previous non-command assignments include service as an Infantry Platoon Leader, Scout Platoon Leader, Headquarters Company Executive Officer and Weapons Company Executive Officer in the 4th Infantry Division and 2d Infantry Division; Brigade Adjutant, 187th Infantry Regiment; Brigade Operations Officer, 1st Region ROTC; Group Adjutant, 353d Engineer Group; Governance Coordinator, 1st Cavalry Division; Brigade Plans Officer, Battalion Executive Officer and Brigade Operations Officer in the 1st Armor Division.

His command assignments include 12 months as Commander, D Company and 13 months as Commander, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky; and 30 months as Commander, 3rd Squadron, 7th U.S. Cavalry, 3d Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia, where he deployed his squadron to Afghanistan.

His overseas assignments include Camp Greaves, Korea, Rome, Italy, and Lille, France. Col. Varney has also completed four combat tours in support of Operation Desert Shield/Storm, Iraqi Freedom, and Operation New Dawn. His most recent combat deployment to Afghanistan was in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Col. Varney holds a Master of Military Arts and Sciences degree from the School of Advanced Military Studies, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He also is a Distinguished Graduate of the U.S. Army War College with a Master Degree of Strategic Studies.

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with three OLC, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with three OLC, the Army Commendation Medal with six OLC, the OIF and OEF Campaign Medals, Desert Shield and Storm Campaign Medals, the Parachutist Badge, the Air Assault Badge, the Expert Infantryman Badge, and the Combat Medic Badge.

Col. Varney is a native of San Diego, California. He and his wife have two children.
